Through amalgamating the former four pre-clinical Departments of Anatomy, Biochemistry (Medicine), Pharmacology and Physiology, the School of Biomedical Sciences was formed under the Faculty of Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong on 1 June 2009. Since its formation, our School has put tremendous efforts and resources in promoting cutting-edge and translational research through interdisciplinary collaboration as well as quality graduate and undergraduate education.

Being the first of its kind in Hong Kong, our School has established five Thematic Research Programs (TRPs), namely i.) Cancer and Inflammation; ii.) Neuro-degeneration, -development and Repair; iii.) Reproduction, Development and Endocrinology; iv.) Stem Cell and Regeneration; and

v.) Vascular and Metabolic Biology. Members of these five Programs, including those clinical Associate Members, have been supported by our Core Laboratories which provide state-of-the-art equipment and specialized technologies. The different theme-based seminars and the School of Biomedical Sciences Research Day 2011 were two of the examples showing our commitment to the pursuit of research excellence.

Similarly, we have placed great importance on the provision of quality teaching and learning environment to our graduate and undergraduate students. With the consolidation of teaching manpower, synergies in graduate and undergraduate teaching have been made possible. The new MPhil-PhD in Biomedical Sciences Program has admitted its first cohort of students in 2010-11. The establishment of the Teaching and Learning Unit and the first School of Biomedical Sciences Postgraduate Research Day 2010 were yet another two prominent examples showcasing our dedication to the quest of excellence in education.

To promote stronger scientific collaboration with overseas universities and research institutes and to further broaden the international outlook of our investigators and students, we have developed academic links with a number of prestigious higher education and research institutions in the Mainland and overseas.

To prepare for the anticipated expansion in research activities, our School will be relocated by 1st quarter of 2012 to Block 1, CUHK Centralized General Research Lab Complex, Area 39 (Northside Research Campus). The new research block has been named as Lo Kwee-Seong Integrated Biomedical Sciences Building to commemorate the philanthropy of the K.S. Lo Foundation.

The different pages of this website will give you more details on our School, including the profiles of our research staff. Meanwhile, our very first Annual Report 2009-2010 can give you more ideas on the achievements we have made so far in different domains.
