Li Jianzhen, Ph.D. Graduate in Biomedical Sciences

I have been studied and worked in the School of Biomedical Sciences for more than 6 years, and it has been a wonderful experience that will forever be held in my heart. In 2011, I obtained my Ph.D. from the School of Biomedical Sciences (SBS), and then returned to my hometown of Lanzhou in Gansu Province to work at Northwest Normal University. From 2014 to 2017, I returned to the School of Biomedical Sciences and completed my postdoctoral training. Since then, I have been actively involved as a professor and supervisor of Ph.D. students and am currently the Dean of the College of Life Sciences at Northwest Normal University.

The motto of the Chinese University of Hong Kong is "Through learning and temperance to virtue", while the Northwest Normal University, where I am currently working, follows the motto "Toward a Perfection of Character and Learning". I really appreciate the motto of both universities as it emphasises the need for knowledge and uniformity of behaviour. I have worked tirelessly to embody the unity of knowledge and action and strive to become an excellent researcher and educator. Through my efforts, I would like to make a significant contribution to the advancement of scientific research and education in the western region of China.

I established the first zebrafish research laboratory in northwest China and did a series of works to discover new hormones and study their function in animal development. For example, we have worked to establish a zebrafish model to study vertebrate ovarian development (Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology, invited review, 2020). Using the zebrafish as a model, we have discovered the involvement of a new type of programmed cell death - cell pyroptosis - in ovulation (Cell Discovery, 2021). We have also revealed the function of the novel insulin-like growth factor Igf3 in ovarian development (Biology of Reproduction, review, 2021). In addition to these successes, we have recently identified a previously unknown hormone secreted by germ cells. This hormone regulates food intake, glucose metabolism and ovarian development in fish and we have named it Gonacin (iScience, 2023). Moving forward, I will continue to work on the discovery and functional analysis of new hormones and eventually apply them in production practice.

我在生物醫學學院求學、工作六年多的時間,這是值得一輩子都慶幸的愉快經歷。我於2011年生物醫學學院獲得博士學位。獲得博士學位後,我便回到家鄉甘肅蘭州,在西北師範大學工作。之後從2014年到2017年又返回生物醫學學院,接受了近三年的博士後訓練,之後在西北師範大學工作至今。目前是該校的教授、博士生導師,並擔任西北師範大學生命科學學院院長。

香港中文大學的校訓是「博文約禮」,而我目前任職的西北師範大學的校訓為「知術欲圓,行旨須直」。我非常喜歡兩所學校的校訓,都強調知識需和行為統一。因此,我努力踐行知行合一,希望成為一名優秀的科研和教育工作者,為我國西部地區生物學的科學研究和教育事業做出自己的貢獻。

我建立了我國西北地區第一個斑馬魚研究實驗室,針對新激素的發現和在動物發育中的功能開展了系列工作 在過去的幾年裡,我們致力於建立研究脊椎動物卵巢發育的斑馬魚模型(Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology, review, 2020),利用斑馬魚為模型首次發現新型的細胞程式性死亡方式——細胞焦亡參與排卵(Cell Discovery, 2021),揭示了新型胰島素類生長因數Igf3在卵巢發育中的功能(Biology of Reproduction, review, 2021)。最近在魚類中發現一個新的在生殖細胞中分泌的激素,可調控攝食、糖代謝和卵巢發育,我們將該激素命名為性腺升糖素Gonacin(iScience,2023)。我將繼續致力於新激素的發現和功能研究,將其應用於生產實踐中。
