Zhirenova Zhamilya, B.Sc. Graduate in Biomedical Sciences (2022) & MPhil-PhD student in Biomedical Sciences
Biotechnology is in its golden era in this day and age, with a growing demand for experts in biomedical sciences. I believe that Hong Kong is the right place to succeed in this field with its thriving ecosystem. As an international student from Kazakhstan, I have studied in Hong Kong for four years and explored numerous opportunities that this city offers. After graduating from the BSc in Biomedical Sciences programme of the School of Biomedical Science (SBS), CUHK in summer 2022, I have continued my journey at SBS and started my Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences here. My current research is carried out at the Institute for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine (iTERM) and the Centre for Neuromusculoskeletal Restorative Medicine (CNRM). My project is related to the stem cells and biomaterials-based approach to chronic wound healing. I aspire to develop my career in translational research to facilitate the application of innovations from bench to bedside.
I am grateful to the School for all the support, motivation, and guidance throughout my undergraduate study. During my study, I completed the Summer Undergraduate Biomedical Research Attachment (SUBRA) which provided me fruitful and valuable hand-on research experience. Subsequently, I joined the motor neuroscience laboratory as a student researcher. In addition to academic research, I also took part in industrial internship at Rohto Advanced Research Hong Kong Limited (RARHK), as well as the Hong Kong Institute of Biotechnology (HKIB) Advanced Therapy Products (ATP) Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) Centre.
My university life was full of vivid impressions, great people, and exciting moments which enormously benefited my personal growth. I actively engaged in multiple student committees, including serving as Internal-vice President at the Morningside College Student Union, Academic Officer at the Society of the School of Biomedical Sciences, and event manager at the Central Asian Association of CUHK. By organizing various activities, my fellows and I contributed to promoting cultural exchange on campus, which enriched our learning experience and helped us to grow as well-versed professionals.
